Signs Your AC Compressor May Be Failing

Outdoor HVAC unit compressor components

The compressor is the most critical and expensive component of your air conditioning system. Often referred to as the "heart" of the AC, it pump refrigerant between the indoor and outdoor units, enabling the heat exchange process that cools your home.

Because replacing a compressor is costly, identifying warning signs early can save you from a complete, unexpected system breakdown. Here are the common indicators that your AC compressor is struggling.

1. The System Is Blowing Warm Air

If your indoor blower fan is running but you only feel lukewarm air coming from your vents, your compressor may not be circulating refrigerant.

  • The Diagnosis: If the compressor fails to start or run, the refrigerant remains stationary, and no heat exchange occurs.
  • Important Note: A failed compressor capacitor can mimic this issue. A capacitor is a much cheaper part to replace. A technician should always test the starting capacitor before condemning a compressor.

2. Hard Starting (Shaking or Stuttering)

When your air conditioner turns on, do you hear a brief stuttering sound, or does the outdoor unit shake visibly?

  • The Diagnosis: This behavior is known as "hard starting." It occurs when the compressor is struggling to start up and requires more electrical current than normal. Hard starting is often a sign of internal mechanical wear or electrical winding degradation.
  • The Fix: Adding a compressor start-assist kit (hard start kit) can help extend the life of an aging compressor, but it is often a temporary solution.

3. Loud Noises During Operation

While outdoor units make a steady humming noise, they should not squeal, rattle, clatter, or growl.

  • The Diagnosis: Loud grinding or rattling sounds indicate that internal bearings are worn out, electrical motor windings are failing, or the compressor's piston valves are loose.
  • What to Do: Shut down the system if you hear grinding noises to prevent the compressor from locking up completely.

4. Frequent Circuit Breaker Tripping

If your AC shuts down and you find that the outdoor unit's circuit breaker has tripped in your main electrical panel, do not just flip it back on.

  • The Diagnosis: A failing compressor can overheat or experience a short-to-ground, drawing excessive electrical current and tripping the safety breaker. Continually resetting the breaker can cause an electrical fire or damage other components.
  • What to Do: Keep the breaker off and schedule a diagnostic check.

Test Before You Replace

Many homeowners assume a dead compressor means they must buy a whole new HVAC system. While a failed compressor often warrants system replacement if the unit is old, many symptoms are caused by simple electrical issues like bad starting relays, weak run capacitors, or blown fuses.
